“I don’t want people to see my films and just laugh, I want them to see my film and discuss it” – Kunle Afolayan covers Guardian Life Magazine

Known for his outstanding work in the film industry, Kunle Afolayan stands out as one of the most important film directors of our time. His resume includes directing as well as acting in the films October 1st, Phone Swap, CEO and The Figurine, which won five major Africa Movie Academy Awards.

The movie producer covers Guardian Life magazine and he talks passionately about his love for culture, which is evident in most of his work, particularly October 1st.

Guardian Life had a few words with Kunle Afolayan on his journey to fame. See excerpts below.

On how he got into directing: When I was going to start, I was actually going to start as a filmmaker, then I reached out to some people who worked with my father in the past and some of them just thought I was a joke. Filmmaking is something you have to learn. Yes, it is an acquired skill but you can’t say, “Oh I have talent of being a filmmaker.” You have to learn, and with the camera you have to learn how to operate all these gears. It is a lot of processes. Going to them I was barely 20. I went to Tunde Kelani, I went to a few people. They told me, for you to be a filmmaker you have to learn it. You go to school but you look like you have a good face for camera, why don’t you start as an actor just like your father? Then he said we are working on Sunday, you can come for audition and I was picked. We did the film Saworoide in ’98. The production values were really good, it made a hit, I played a prince. It was a very good film and it gave me a lot of mileage. I was already working in a bank when we shot that film. After that it was difficult for me to do a lot because of my bank work.

On his creative process: I love culture. A lot of times, my heart skips when I remember that some of these things are going. I remember we don’t archive things in this country. I remember that in the nearest future my children won’t be speaking our language. So I said I want to do a small film set in a small location about a particular tribe. They don’t speak Yoruba, they don’t speak Igbo or Hausa, they speak a minority language. It was pretty difficult. Tunde Babalola who wrote the film gave me the synopsis for October 1st, that was not what I was looking to do, I was looking to do a small budget film, anything period of course will increase your budget. In re-enacting the period you need to spend a lot of money especially in a country where you don’t have archives. It was a bit difficult to shoot, because we had to travel to Ondo to all these places that depict what we were looking for but in the end we pulled it off.

On his type of movies: A lot of people are doing the wedding parties and trips to Jamaica and they are very commercial. I don’t make films for commercial reasons; I don’t want people to see my films and just laugh, I want them to see my film and discuss it. It doesn’t make those other films anything bad, it is just their style, my style is different.

Ifunanya Maduka teams up with Uzodinma Iweala for an Intriguing New Film on the Chibok Girls |‘Waiting for Hassana’

Author of ‘Beast of No Nation’ Uzodinma Iweala has teamed up with Ifunanya Maduka to tell a very interesting story in a short film called “Waiting for Hassana” which will premiere at Sundance this Friday, January 20th. The film, which is in Hausa with no subtitles, tells the story of Jessica.

In 2014, 276 teenage girls came together for exams in Chibok, Nigeria—by dawn, nearly all had disappeared, and their school was burned to the ground. Jessica, an escapee, shares her haunting account of a friendship violently interrupted by Boko Haram.

Uzodinma shared the news of the film on Instagram a couple of hours ago saying:

"So I haven’t told anyone but Funa Maduka and I made a film called Waiting for Hassana, and that film premiers at #sundance Friday January 20th, 2017. Over a year and a half ago my mom called me into her study and said “Uzo some stories just need to be told,” and she spoke about the trip she made to the school in Chibok where almost three years ago 276 young women were kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram. My mom introduced me to a local journalist and her husband, a doctor, who helped to facilitate contact with a number of these brave young women who escaped during the first day of captivity and who have committed to continuing their education as a way of paying tribute to their still abducted friends. I teamed up with my friend Funa Maduka (who directed this marvelous work) and Victor Okhai (our amazing cinematographer) and together we made a film that I hope speaks to the strength and resilience of not just these wonderful young women, but also their community and our country, Nigeria. A film like this is the result of so much team work and intense passion. My hope is that it adds to an important and ongoing conversation about a crisis in a country we love. Thank you to the young women who shared their stories and the crew, producers, and everyone for the hard work and dedication in making this happen. Thank you especially to Funa for your perseverance and creative vision. Director, screenwriter, and co-producer of the film, Ifunanya Maduka also says “A year ago today, filming commenced on a short documentary that aimed to tell the story of loss and resilience in the wake of the brutal kidnapping of 276 school girls from #Chibok in northern Nigeria. Today, I’m happy to share that WAITING FOR HASSANA (my directorial debut ) will world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2 weeks! This was a passion project that quickly took on a life of its own.”

If you sleep with other people's husband, when you get married don't be angry if karma comes - Tonto Dikeh's bestie, Shakar El

Tonto Dikeh's one time best friend and rapper, Shakar El seems to be throwing shades at the actress. In his latest post on Instagram, he wrote,

'Karma is a Bitch that all Bitches out there should respect because it will always come and show you pepper. My advise to young girls out there, if you are sleeping with other people's husband and breaking homes, when you get married abeg don't be angry if karma comes knocking at your door.

Turn a Blind eye and enjoy your husband's money and that is if you re lucky enough to marry a rich one sha. Don't Fight nor break things in the house oh because that is Domestic Violence. Always put yourself in the position of your Victim and their Children while you re in the act. I know a celebrity wedding Guest of a Lagos Society Wedding 3 years ago that Started Sleeping with the Groom just few days after the wedding, that was Brutal nwanne, no remorse for the newly wedded bride haba. And for Men,no need to talk about Us because like they do say in Nigeria 'Men are Scum' Shakar Nwa Mama is not a Saint in fact I am serious Sinner but I will only use the name of God when I truly mean it..God is Merciful and may He Forgive us all'.
