Our Love Story ...

I was at work sometime last year when my bbm beeped . I wasn't particularly busy so I checked to see who it was and it was my girl friend. Only four words were on the screen... "Nike, I'm in love." Needless to say I jumped up and ran into an empty conference room and speed dialed her! (Y'all know that there are some conversations that cannot be carried out via chat. This was one of such.)

You see, my friend had been single for a while and I totally did not see it coming. I was so excited and when she told me who the guy was, I was over the moon! Perfect combination! OMG!! I was so excited you'd have thought I won the lottery or something. I could not be happier for my BFF. Fast forward over a year later and he popped the question! What??? I was in Family Dollar (a store) when she called to tell me and I screamed so loud they almost threw me out. I was filled with so much joy and excitement. You see, I love her so much and I know she deserves the happiness that's being coming to her.

That is why I'm particularly excited about this post that you are about to read. You see, this couple is my favorite couple EVER! (Btw, I'm birthday mates with the guy.. :) Anyway, my friend told me that she wanted to write this article and I  thought what better avenue to share this beautiful love story right? Anyway, here goes how my dearest friend feels about Apostle M - as I like to call him; but She calls him Lillie Philia.

"My name is Lilly and am engaged to a phenomenal man called Lillie Philia. We attend the same church, but became very close at an outreach conducted by our church for leaders. (What a good way to start, lol.) We exchanged blackberry pins and he took it up from there.

Today am writing a public note about the things I love about Lillie Philia, he has absolutely no idea I’m doing this… Here are 21 things I love about my Lillie Philia.

1. His love for God; he is passionate about GOD, A man who talks the talk and work the work...
2. His height... he’s got a good height that I’m tripping for, a man I can look up to literally and figuratively
3. His humility... the one Yoruba guy i know who is very humble and straight forward.

I PASSED THE BAR!!!!!

People!!!

How have you all been? I know it's been a minute but it's because I've had a lot going on. Anyway, remember I graduated law school in May 2013? If you have not seen the video make sure to check it out. So typically, after graduating law school in the U.S., the next step is to take the bar exam in order to become licensed to practice law.

So between May 2013 to July 2013 I quit my job and spent 8hrs - 10rs everyday studying and prepping for the bar exam. I can't tell you how difficult and stressful that period was for me. I wasn't blogging remember? Anyway, I did all I could and on the 30th and 31st of July 2013, I sat for the bar exam.

Now this exam is the toughest thing any attorney can ever go through. I mean 15 subjects and 15 hours of testing? Really? Anyway, I sat for the exam and at the end I had no clue whether I'd pass or not, it was that difficult. Some questions came from aspect of my studying that I wasn't too confident about. It took the grace of God for me not to burst into tears in the exam hall.

The Indomie Generation

So, it was my friend’s birthday a few days ago and I noticed how majority of his friends sent him messages on his Facebook page. Most of the messages consisted of “HBD”, “hbd”, “LLNP”, “Hapi Buffday”, “Hapi Bday” etcetera. Those messages not only infuriated me but also got me thinking. Is this what Generation X has been reduced to? Everything has to be a quickie, in and out and that’s it? No more regards of the effect of what taking time to do something is?

I mean, what would it take every one of those people to write a complete sentence? “Happy Birthday” or “Long Life and Prosperity?” Nothing! It would cost them nothing to do that but still; they opted for the quickest and easy way out. Generation X has now become the indomie generation. Everything has to be quick and fast. In and out of the microwave.

A Bleeding Heart....

Sometimes my heart bleeds...
It just simply bleeds in desperation
Bleeds for it seems so near to despair.
For sometimes....just a speck of time along the way...few and.far in between times....it bleeds.
I feel burdened by faith and shackled by the Love of God.

Do I want to be free from His love?
Definitely NOT......
But every once in a while, I wish it wasn't so HARD...
I wish it wasn't so hard during the lonely times... During the lonely nights that turn into days and days that turn into weeks....
I wish it wasn't so hard during the times I want to up and delve into Sin... and the pillows on my bed no longer provide the comfort that I desire...
I wish it wasn't so hard when compromise seems easiest... when all I had to do was throw caution to the wind and satisfy my cravings.....
I wish it wasn't so hard when brethren are so far away, non-Christians seem like best friends.....

Confessions of a 23year Old Lady

Dear Prodigal Daughter:
My name is XOXO X. XOXO, you can call me XOXO for short. I'm 23 years old.

I was born into a Christian home and according to my mum, I was conceived because three of my direct elder siblings died, and my parents couldn't give me a shot because they felt I was going to die, so I never saw my baby picture except for when I was like four or five years old. Raised up by Godly parents although I wanted more of the love but I don't blame anyone for what happened, while growing up I noticed people didn't really like me I can't really tell or maybe I just felt that way, I was in the children's choir in the local church which I attended then, I had and still have this great voice so my regional leader in church then just took interest in me. I was so hardworking that at the age of ten, mum asked me to stay with a pregnant church folk and help her with domestic chores, I agreed. Although my stay there was okay, I noticed some funny things about the man. On the day of the wife's delivery, he Raped Me.

What's Your Selling Point?

There are over 7,178,000,000 people in the world. That's Seven Billion, One Hundred and Seventy Eight Million people! That's a lot!  And the number continues to grow because a child is born every millisecond. In this year alone, there have been over 95 million births all over the world. I could continue to to give you the statistics but it will all come down to the same point that I'm trying to make: What's your selling point?

You see, God is so magnificent such that He is able to create these many humans but only one YOU. Regardless of the number of people in the entire world, there is only one YOU. No two people have the same DNA. Not even identical twins. There's just YOU and that is it. Isn't that mind blowing? So, if there is only one YOU, why would you want to be anyone else but YOU? It begs the question: What's your selling point? i.e. What makes you stand out from the billions of people in the world? Who are you?
Listen, this is not about falling into a category now. Black or white, male or female, tall or short, skinny or phat, christian or atheist etc. All those categories are irrelevant because this is just about you. What is your identity? What differentiates you from everybody else? Everyone is created for a special purpose and a special reason. What is yours? Because that purpose and reason is your identity and your destiny and if you don't know who you are then why would I care to know who you are? Better still, if you don't know who you are, then you are just another statistic in the world; you are simply lost in the billions.

Are Christians Boring To Date?

I once had this guy ask me out and all I could think of was what life with him would be like: 21 days of dry fasting, 12 hours of intercessory prayer meetings everyday, house fellowships, tying ankara wrapper all over the house, calling him Daddy Tolu (or Our Daddy), and just completely being dead to my self. Emmm no, that was not going to happen. That got me thinking, are christian relationships boring? Are we Christians boring to date? Am I a sinner for wanting to have a fun-filled and yet Godly relationship? Is that even possible? Am I boring to date? Time and time again I've considered these questions in my mind.

What is fun to you? To some people, exciting relationships and courtships are ones that include partying, drinking, clubbing and sex. While to some other people (me included) fun includes going on group dates, hanging out with friends, attending events, serving in church, staying at home and watching a movie, and dancing in front of the mirror. (lol, ignore the last one). The idea of fun varies from one individual to another. Are we even supposed to have fun as Christians?

New Segment: Ask ProdigalDaughter....

Over the course of my existence, I've come to realize that I am the kind of person who loves to keep nothing inside. If I feel a certain way and it bothers me, then I'm going to talk about it to the person concerned. Regardless of the consequences. Heck, I once told a guy how I felt about him ... hmmm.. another story for another day.

Anyway, the point of my introduction is to relate to you how important it is to get a lot of things off your mind. Believe me, simply saying it to someone is enough to make you feel better. However, I do understand that the society we live in can be very judgmental which makes it difficult for people to share their problems.

James 5:16 says "Therefore, confess your "sins" to each other and pray for each other, so that you may be healed." (emphasis added). I interpret this verse to include even our personal struggles and weakness. Hence, the new segment: Ask ProdigalDaughter. While i'm not an expert in everything, I do believe you will not be reading this blog if you had not gained one or two things. So, why not share the problems or challenges that you are facing in any aspect of your life and let other people provide Godly advice to you and spiritually "hold" your hands through the difficult period that you are facing? Here's how it works.

Graduation and BellaNaija

Calvary greetings to you all,

IMG_0334This post is long overdue but better late than never right? As a way of resuming "talking" with you guys after such a long break, I've decided to share with you my graduation pictures. I started this blog in my first year of Law school and by and large, you were with me through the entire experience. So it is only prudent that I share with you the memories from my graduation on May 19, 2013.

IMG_0390 (2)Furthermore, I was also featured on Bellanaija. If you have not seen that post, please click here to see it. http://www.bellanaija.com/2013/07/06/bellanaija-celebrates-academic-excellence-class-of-2013-adenike-adebayo/ God is taking us places and there is no platform that is too small, it is only a stepping stone to the next level. Always remember that your best days are not behind you, they are ahead of you. Your best is yet to come. It was definitely a beautiful thing to have been featured on BN. I loved every second of it. I have more pictures and video so keep reading.

I'm Back And Better!!!

Barristers' Ball 2013 provided by Law Career ServicesWow! This is the longest that I have been away from you guys and you cannot even begin to comprehend how much I've missed you all. It’s been a crazy ride, I tell you. Nevertheless, I am excited to write (if I tell you where I am right now, writing this piece, you will not believe it.)

If you refer to my last post, you will see that I had a bit of struggle with certain things that were going on in my life. During that period, I said I thought I was backsliding, well, I pretty much did. It became a job to pick up my bible and pray, I was uncomfortable in the presence of God and every time I opened my mouth in praise, it was empty.

It’s a dangerous thing when the devil has a strong hold of guilt and past sins on you, it takes the grace of God to get past it. It was a huge struggle for me I tell you. It was also in this same period that I struggled with emotions and heart breaks and …….. You get the gist, it was a tough season. What made it worse was that I went my own way. I started doing things the way I thought should be done. I stopped living by faith rather, I started living by flesh. I did what I felt like when I felt like it.

I Think I'm Backsliding .....

Backslide“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.” -  Louise ErdrichThe Painted Drum LP

The above quote applies to what my heart has experienced in the past four weeks. I don't like writing about my personal issues on here but I've been absent. Here's why: in the space of 4 weeks, my heart was broken on 3 three different occasions by 3 different people.

A Love That Hurts ....

11757lovehurts011250341397The popular pop artiste, Keri Hilson, sang a song that says "this love is taking all of my energy....." while the well known Rihanna sang "... we found love in a hopeless place...." One thing that is common about these two songs is that both songs talk about a love that hurts, a love that's painful, a love that breaks your heart, a love that steals your peace, a love that drains you of all your energy.  Is that the kind of love that you have?

Enthronement...The Story of Esther

285px-Esther_haramThere is something about God: when He is taking you to a greater height, he displaces people to put you in your right position. Even better is that he doesn't do it in the hidden place, it broadcasts it so that the world will see. But before you can be enthroned in your rightful place, there are five (5) things you need to know and they are all found in the book of Esther Ch.1-2:

(1) The Process: Listen, when God is taking you to your position of destiny, it does not just happen overnight. It takes a process, it takes time but when it will happen, it take only but a second. In this stage, God causes your "enemies" to become too full of themselves. Esther Ch 1 vs. 10-12. The king ordered Vashti to appear before him and his council but Vashti refused! This is step one. As the saying goes, pride goes before a fall. Unknown to Vashit, she was in the process of vacating her seat for the rightful owner.. Hmmm "he that cometh after you is preferred than he that cometh before. ..."

To Introduce Or Not To Introduce Lee Boo?

public_display_of_affection_by_tankana-d2xtsfaDear Prodigal Children, :D

I know it's been forever since I wrote something but you cannot even begin to imagine how my life has been these past few weeks. It's just been filled with all kinds of drama. Drama to the left, right and center... anyway that's talk for another day.

So last weekend, I was having a conversation with one of my male "friends" ;) and he kept insisting that he has no obligation to introduce his girlfriend to his friends as his girlfriend. Get? Ok, imagine this scenario: You are with your boyfriend and one of his female friends walks over to you guys and your boyfriend introduces you by your name, period. Nothing like "meet Funmi, my girlfriend..." is that a problem?

For The Love Of Valentine....!

images (1)Except you are living under a rock, you will know that what everyone seems to be talking about is valentine. "Who is your valentine?" "What are you getting your boyfriend?" "Any romantic dinner plans?" and many more are such questions that will flowing from the mouth of ladies in this season.

While I will not bore you by giving you the origin of Valentine, we all know it's about lovers all around the world. So, typically, February 14 seems to be the day that most single ladies dread the most. Especially when all your friends are either in a relationship, married or engaged. As a single lady on valentine's day, (especially one who is seeking to be in a relationship), you feel left out of the whole shenanigans. But does this have to be?

Who says valentine is only meant for lovers? Tell me who says that you, as single woman cannot be a part of the celebration?  I'm particularly focused on ladies because we are the ones that tend to feel most affected when holidays such as this come around. So what can you as a single woman whose heart is dedicated to God do on Val's day? How can you make valentine a lot more interesting for yourself?

Will You Please Be My Valentine?

images (4)Wow! It's February already and y'all know what that means, it's Valentine! Now I know there are some people out there who have no expectations for this valentine; and having spend quite a number of valentine by myself, I know the feeling. Especially when all your friends are either in relationships, engaged or married.

Personally, I've never had a memorable valentine. There, I said it. I've always either spent February 14 at work or in school; it's always been a usual day for me, nothing different. However, entering this year, I promised myself that regardless of what happens, I am going to make this Valentine a memorable one.

I intend to make it memorable by sending val's gifts to three people (male/female) that I've NEVER met before. Keep reading to find out how YOU can be one of those three people.

Temptation ..... The Movie

Tyler-Perry-Temptation-January-2013-BellaNaija003-397x600I just saw the trailer for Tyler Perry's upcoming movie and I just have to say wow! I cannot wait to watch this movie. The very first thing that I noticed was the bible verse upon which I believe the movie is based:

“But he that is an adulterer,
for the folly of his heart
Shall destroy his own soul.”
-Proverbs 6:32

Wow! That verse rang so badly in my head I just could not believe how various situations in my life right now applied to this verse. Check out the trailer of the movie right here ....

Alabaster Box - What the Meaning of this Song?

imagesAlabaster Box - Cece Winas; We all know this song. But what's the real meaning? Here is the lyrics of the song.

"The room grew still As she made her way to Jesus
She stumbles through the tears that made her blind
She felt such pain, Some spoke in anger, Heard folks whisper
There's no place here for her kind .....
Still on she came
Through the shame that flushed her face
Until at last, she knelt before his feet, And though she spoke no words
Everything she said was heard, As she poured her love for the Master
From her box of alabaster.......

The Battered Woman Syndrome ...

domestic_violenceThis is a very sensitive and vital subject, and I hope I can help someone in this situation. Why do women stay with men who beat them up? I am a man and I must
say I have never laid hand on a woman, for obvious reasons, where would I hit?

Not the face, all my lady friends are pretty I wouldn’t want to hurt her face, where else can I hit? Her chest, Tummy, Come one, a woman is not designed to be hit. Her entire body frame is configured for amusement; there isn’t a part that accommodates a punch.  So when you find a man beating up a woman,  you see a man who has lost it and a woman who has almost lost it all: the man has beaten her emotionally, he has taken every ounce of self-worth she has.

What's the meaning of that song?

downloadHow many of us actually understand the meaning of the songs that we listen to? I’m talking about gospel songs now and not "Kukure" or "Oliver Twist." Do we take time to understand and search for the deep meanings behind these great songs that lead us into God’s presence?

Not until recently, I was a victim of just singing songs without really knowing the depth from which the writer wrote the song. I know songs minister to each of us in different ways but until we understand the depth and source of a song, we will always be missing out on something extremely important.

That is why I've created a new segment/page on this blog called “Song Meanings”. But I’m going to need your help. Here is how it works.
