FlashBack: Most Embarrassing Moment Ever!

I was in Secondary School when I had the most embarrassing and traumatic moment of my entire life! I attended one of the numerous Federal Government Girls’ Colleges in Nigeria, arguably one of the best high schools you could have attended in the 90’s. But anyway, I was in S.S.1 when this awful event  took place. I was a boarding house student, and for every boarding house student, food was paramount and of great importance. My favorite happened to be beans. Yes, red beans was my favorite meal. I never got tired of it.

So on this unfortunate evening, it was 6:00pm and time for dinner. As customary, I carried my bowl and off to the dinning hall I went with some other friends. There was a huge crowd of students waiting at the dinning hall. The food was not yet ready so we hung around, gisting and hoping that a “senior” student did not ask us to run errands.

After 30 minutes of waiting, the Cooks brought out the food; straight from the fire was a boiling pot of red beans. That was when the pushing began. Understandably so because everyone was hungry! Ok, if you ever attended secondary school in Nigeria then you should be familiar with what is called “consuming”.

The art of consuming takes place when the pot of food is left to the discretion of students and everyone starts rushing, fighting, pushing and kicking so as to be able to get as much food (if any) as possible. Consuming was common and also took place when the “prefects” were not around or could not careless. Enough of the lesson, back to my story.

So, we all started pushing and screaming, waving our bowls as if the food was going to drop from Heaven.

The Cooks tried all they could to keep the peace but we were having none of it. One way or another, I ended up in front and facing me was this huge pot of hot steaming beans. I could sense trouble brewing and so I started pushing backwards but the more I pushed backwards, the more the hungry students pushed me towards the food.

For whatever reason, there was a massive push and someone who had just collected her bowl of beans dropped the bowl right on my head. Immediately, I fainted on the floor of the dinning hall. My heart stopped beating for five (5) seconds. All the cells on my body went numb and on the 6th second, I started screaming at the top of my lungs.

The entire dinning hall went quiet and they all froze. The only sound that was heard was my scream for help and deliverance. I was in agonizing pain and all I could do was scream as loudly as my lungs allowed me.

As if coming out of a trance, every one in the dinning hall went into panic mood, running helter skelter. Some good Samaritans carried me on their shoulders and ran faster than Usain Bolt to the clinic where an entire bucket of water was downed on me before further treatment commenced. You can only imagine the intense bullying, jest and laughter I had to endure in the weeks that followed that event.

You would think that after such a traumatic and embarrassing moment, I’d never taste beans again. Let’s just say God forbid that I should not eat beans at least once in week. LOL

Love!

  1. Hahahahahahaha....oh please, this note just made my day. I attended a Federal Government Girls' College, too!
It was during the struggle for moi moi that curse be on you and you fall inside the basin...lol

Actually, something of this nature happened to me, it was during dinner, we were served porridge yam. During prayers for the food, someone dropped her plate on my seat...I mean, fresh hot plate of porridge yam. Immediately after prayers I just let my weight go down on the seat, right into the hot plate of food, gbaammmmmm!!! chei, I think my heart stopped, the heat from the plate and the shock. Worse, I wore a pink daywear and immediately after dinner was prep, our dorm had been locked....I had to cry 'blood' just for the key to be released for me to change...since then I had to always look at my seat before making any move.
